SmartEye - Taupo District Council

Taupo, New Zealand

A bustling tourist town in the heart of the North Island’s geothermal and alpine region, Taupo is an all season destination where the retailers depend on trade from both domestic and international travellers. To make the CBD and retail area attractive for visitors, the council provides free but time restricted on and off street parking.

Dianne Thompson who was Senior Compliance Officer at Taupo District Council, said that Smart Parking’s system had been in the back of the council’s minds since they first saw it over five years ago. The authority was particularly interested in the SmartEye monitoring system with the web based management and reporting capabilities of SmartRep with the potential this offered for an efficient paid parking system in the future.

“There was no other product like it, or remotely near to its quality”, said Dianne. “We decided from a reporting point of view that it was going to be very useful for us. We wouldn’t need consultants to tell us how the parking was in the CBD, because we’d have real-time reporting from sensors in the car parks.”

Since installing approximately 900 SmartEye sensors throughout the CBD, Taupo has increased its revenue from parking infringements. However the real benefit is that council decision makers now have at their disposal the data they need to adjust parking times and zones in a way that benefits both the town’s businesses and their customers.
